A reducer, also known as a reducing coupling, is a pipe fitting used to connect pipes of different diameters. It is broadly classified into two main types: concentric reducers and eccentric reducers.

Detailed description

A reducer, also known as a reducing coupling, is a pipe fitting used to connect pipes of different diameters. It is broadly classified into two main types: concentric reducers and eccentric reducers.

What on earth is this thing:

1.  Core function: Connects large-diameter and small-diameter pipes to achieve a diameter transition.

2.  Main categories:

    - Concentric eccentricity: The centers of the two ends lie on the same straight line; this is the most common type.

- Eccentric reducer: The centers of the two ends do not lie on the same straight line, with one end flat and the other tapered.

3.  Common materials: carbon steel, stainless steel ( 304/316L ), alloy steels, etc.

4.  It goes by many names: reducing pipe, reducer, and rubber expansion joint (for rubber types), among others—any of these may be referred to as a “reducer.”

How to choose and how to use:

1.  Concentric reducer: Typically used in vertical pipelines or in applications where liquid accumulation is not a critical concern.

2.  Eccentric reducer:

Top‑flat installation: Used in gas pipelines to prevent gas from accumulating and forming a gas pocket.

Bottom‑flat mounting: Suitable for fluids containing impurities, facilitating drainage and preventing clogging.

At the pump inlet: Eccentric reducers with a top-flat configuration are commonly used to prevent cavitation.

3.  Connection methods include butt welding, threaded connections, clamp (groove) fittings, flanges, and more.

4.  Application scenarios: petroleum, chemical, electric power, shipbuilding, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, fire protection, and water supply and drainage, among others.

What’s the approximate range of specifications?

Common specifications: from DN10/DN20 to DN1200 They all have it; the inch system starts from... 1/2" to 48" Not equal.

Common expressions: such as DN80 × 50 8" × 6" It has a large-diameter opening at the front and a small-diameter opening at the back.

Wall thickness grade: Sch5sSch40Sch80 STD XS etc., the most commonly used is STD and XS

Standard System: National Standard GB/T12459-2025 , American standard ASME B16.9 , European standard DIN Wait.
